A MAN-MADE MONUMENT

Greek

Just 15 minutes away from Kalamata, on a shady slope of Messinian Mani, lies maybe the most remarkable and well preserved traditional cobblestone road in the country. A man-made monument, an exquisite attraction is waiting to be discovered. Starting from the village of Sotirianika, it cuts through the olive groves for about one kilometer before it starts to weave the steep pine-clad slope. It twines the mountain like a giant snake and disappears in the sky. Eventually it reaches a plateau not far from the almost deserted village of Altomira, which silently greets the visitor.

"In the thousands of meters of the uphill walk we contemplate that before our age of relentless consumerism, people used to make things to last!"

The famous "Biliovo" as the older generations used to call it, with its 75 turns. The traveller will admire the craftsmanship and the inner desire of the stonebuilders of the turn of the century when human hands tamed the hard stone, and the workers' perspiration watered the sun-scorched land.
